We have produced this guidance for GP Practices as a result of the Government’s recent announcement on the use of face coverings in various public places as we are aware that some practices have already started to receive requests from their patients for exemption letters or certificates.
It is understandable that the general public may be anxious about this, however, GPs are not contractually obliged or in a position to provide exemption letters or certificates for patients who believe they should be exempt from wearing a face covering.
The guidance suggests there is no requirement for the public to provide evidence, medical or otherwise, for exemption therefore a self declaration from the individual should be sufficient.
GP practices and Cambs LMC are under no obligation to provide letters of support for anyone who does not fall under the list of exemptions but considers them to have another reason to be exempted.
Please do not signpost patients to Cambs LMC to request exemption letters or certificates, instead they should be directed to the GOV.UK website if they require further information on the use of face coverings or they can print their own exemption cards if they so wish.
