Influenza Vaccinations 2021/2022
We will update this page as and when we receive updates
JCVI published their advice in November 2020 on the use of influenza vaccines in the UK for the 2021/22 season (see below).
Providers delivering influenza vaccinations are encouraged to review the JCVI advice and order vaccines in line with NHSEI reimbursement guidance of 4th February 2021 (see below).
The annual flu reimbursement letter was updated on 1st April 2021 (see below). This letter confirms that those aged 50–64-year-old will be included in the 2021/2022 flu programme and also confirmed the inclusion of a QIVr vaccine.
There will not be central procurement of flu vaccine for the coming year’s scheme, but the at-risk group will be extended as it was in 2020/2021. Practices are advised to take this into account when placing orders.
- QIVr was not initially eligible for reimbursement under the NHS Annual Influenza Vaccination programme for 2021/22, however doses of QIVr are now available to order in limited quantities and will be reimbursable. Other cohort appropriate vaccines (aQIV, QIVc, QIVe) remain reimbursable in any quantity.
- Vaccines for the 50-64 cohort will now be eligible for reimbursement with the timing and prioritisation to be confirmed in further operation guidance
Community pharmacies and General Practice should ensure that they order enough vaccine to achieve or exceed the same level of uptake as the 2020/21 season. They may wish to consider ordering additional vaccine if required to support the vaccination of the 50-64 year old cohort.
NHS England have said that with regards to this autumn, Community pharmacy are expected to play a strong role in vaccinating the 50 to 64 year old cohorts to ensure the availability of general practice capacity to continue their focus on flu and COVID-19 vaccination of the most vulnerable clinical cohorts.
