Primary Care Alert State

Alongside all system partners, GP practices are getting busier, workload and workforce pressures are leading to increased physical and mental health problems for general practice teams. Whilst acute, community and ambulance trusts, and out of hours organisations have data and dashboards to evidence the scale of their challenge and activity, when Cambs LMC articulates how ‘hot’ general practice is, we only have qualitative evidence to bring to the table, which is too little, and often too late.

Our access and demand survey published on 18 June 2021 revealed a system in crisis. Within weeks, other system partners were experiencing significantly increased demand levels which have coincided with a third Covid wave and an unseasonal epidemic of RSV threatening to overwhelm services. Primary Care is the ‘canary in the coal mine’ and we need to be able to flag areas of specific risk for system interventional support when required.

Our Workload Capacity Report from Autumn 2020 set out the need for local systems to be able to monitor pressures on general practices by identifying a system for primary care to flag changes in local operational practice pressures.
